Taking Off with the Houston Rockets
In 1967, the Rockets joined the NBA. Originally playing in San Diego, they moved to Houston in 1971, where the team improved upon their previous record, winning four conference titles, four division titles, and two NBA Championships.
The Houston Rockets play their home games in the Toyota Center, an arena they share with the hockey playing Aeros. The 235 million dollar arena was completed in 2003, allowing the team to move from the older Compaq Center. The arena seats more than 18,000 fans for basketball games. Fans with one of the 103 suites enjoy a VIP restaurant, and there are concessions located throughout the rest of the arena.
It is quite possible that the Houston Rockets are the best cheered team in the NBA. First are the Rockets Power Dancers. These talented women are professionals and students who spend their free time learning and performing routines and dances to entertain the fans at Rockets games. They also perform out in the community and have traveled the world as well. Photos of the ladies have been featured in national magazines such as Maxim and Sports Illustrated.
Of course no mention of the Rockets would be complete without also discussing the Launch Crew that performs tumbling acts, among other feats, and energizes the fans at each game or community event with their own brand of team spirit. There is also the Little Dippers team, composed of area children who perform many of the same functions as the Launch Crew, adding in their own dance routines and talents.
Clutch the Bear is another Rocket’s fan favorite, bringing his own style and fun to each game as well as community events and making appearances around the world. Named the fifth most recognizable mascot in 2005, he joins in the fun wherever it may be, and is one of the Rocket’s biggest fans.
Of course if we’re talking about fans, we also need to mention the Red Rowdies. These are the loudest and proudest Rockets fans, and have earned themselves spotlights on sports show, as well as the gratitude of the team. Seated in their own section, you’ll always know the Rowdies are there, from before the tip-off to the very end of the game.
A Houston Rockets game is entertainment at its finest. From the amazing fans to the many dance teams and squads, there is something for everyone to enjoy at a Rockets game.
